Ive invited two Maine songwriter friends over to my brother-in-laws porch Sunday afternoon, August 3 at 2pm (Eastern Time). Well be swapping songs, taking requests, and broadcasting live world-wide via ConcertWindow. Join us! I first heard Mark Farrington 25 years ago while walking down Exchange Street in Portland. His was singing a high lonesome song on a street corner and his pure, honest voice stopped me in my tracks. Who was this new voice on my territory? I was playing on the streets quite often that year, and I thought I knew all the buskers in the Old Port. Long story short, we became friends and collaborators. We wrote Dance Around the Fire together, and I later recorded his November Skies. Mark went on to form the band Cattle Call. Their one release, Good Life, is one of my (and Karens) favorites. I met Eric Bettencourt just a couple of years ago when he was following in my footsteps, having set out from Portland, Maine to try his luck in the world-renowned music scene of Austin, Texas. He was even a Kerrville New Folk Award winner in 2013, 21 years I after I did the same. Im sure its been hard-going for Eric, as it was for me for the first few years. But he has a distinctive voice, and great attitude and some fine songs. Im looking forward to getting to know him a little better on the porch Sunday.
