Ive just been given the details of the Kuching MPs FB rant, so allow me to just give my view on the whole issue of the nation anthem being played. And I m sure the libertarians amongst us will dislike my position, but it must come as no surprise that I am extremely patriotic and a nationalist at heart. My country comes first. And if at any place, at anytime my national anthem, the Negara Ku is played, I will stand - and i expect all Malaysians to stand. I also expect foreigners to stand out of respect, just as I would if I were in England and God save the Queen was played, or in Singapore and Majulah Singapura was played. Not because I have any special loyalty to their country - but because I am there and it is simple respect and courtesy - my parents brought me up well. I am very proud to be Malaysian, and I am happy to show it and stand proudly when her anthem is heard. It is not Umnos anthem, it is not Pkrs anthem, nor is it Pass or Daps. It is mine, it ours, all Malaysians. And it is not Maoistic to stand !! But it also demeans out anthem if it is used as cheap publicity, or as a political tool. In Malaysia - it must never be forced on the private sector to do it - even if it is the national day. At most the govt should make a request that they do it and leave it at that. I for one - would encourage them - and its only 2 days of the year that are special for us 31st and 16th - why not ? But it should be the cinema owners decision - not a political or governmental instruction. You dont force patriotism, you build it, you develop it. But I can also say that if I was at a function and the National anthem was played and Malaysians didnt stand - i would have a serious go at them. We only have one country, She is not made up of political parties, she is made up of Malaysians. We are Malaysia and while we may be disappointed with, disillusioned by or even disgusted by the political parties within this country, never allow it to affect your love or loyalty to your country. Dont ever allow anyone to say its not your country. Chong Chieng Jen did what many of the monkeys in parliament tend to do, talk without thinking, and believe they are smarter than everyone else. He was wrong, not slightly but completely, and he needs to apologize with no reservations and no excuses. We must hold our mps to higher standards and because hes in the opposition I hold him to a much higher standard, talk is cheap, walk the talk. Vinod Sekhar .
