Ive just spent an interesting afternoon that has left me strangely shaken. A stranger came into our yard two hours ago, a woman from a nearby village who had got lost in the heavy fog and had run out of fuel. She was frightened and confused and desperately offered me money if I would help her. Youre not from around here! I joked because she had a strong English accent and we talk like hillbillies. She was too flustered to crack a smile. Not only had she not educated herself about the names of the main highways in our area, she couldnt fathom how and why her GPS wasnt working. She had no warm clothing on and was heading out into uncharted territory with vapours for fuel. She would be late to pick up her children from school. Worse, when I gave her detailed directions on how to get back to her home, she immediately took a wrong turn and heaven only knows where shell end up this time. Best I could do was help her put a jerry can of fuel into her car, although not of the high grade that the luxury sedan is used to - she pointed that out - then call the local school to alert them of her strange behaviour. Dont want her kids left waiting... People die here in the winter. I think we sometimes forget this harsh reality because life, for the most part, goes according to our little plans. Today was merely a wake up call; I hope the lady is listening.
