Ive learned a lot from the diverse schools Ive taught in this - TopicsExpress

Ive learned a lot from the diverse schools Ive taught in this year. One of the main things is that apathy and ineptitude among students isnt confined to any race or economic class. The problem is that apathetic and inept students in affluent majority communities only have but so far they can fall before their community can/will support them, and they can still reach amazing heights (i.e. George W. Bush). In our communities, the depths of despair and poverty are endless. Rich kids who slack off, dont have the intellectual curiosity, or arent wired to excel in the current assembly line school system, can still land in a career and a life that they might think is beneath them (but young people in some of these other communities would kill for). On the other side of town, the same kind of kid of the wrong skin color and family income hovering around the poverty line, is fast tracked for prison before he leaves the 9th grade. I feel bad for both kids, the rich white kid and the poor black one. Our stagnant/test-based educational system is failing both of them. But only one of them will suffer forever for it.
