Ive only been at my school for two weeks and Im already getting frustrated with all the liberal humanistic scholars I have to read. Heres a few quotes from The Widow and Orphan in the Political Economy of Ancient Israel by Ronald A. Simkins, which is the journal article my Hebrew Bible teacher assigned us this week: ... critical theory has redeemed much of the biblical tradition by exposing and relativizing many of the offensive and problematic parts of the Bible. Gender theory, for example, has been used to lay bare the patriarchal bias of numerous biblical texts and the social structures that produced them... For several decades, biblical scholars have recognized, thanks to critical theory, that the biblical texts are a product of the elite and upper class circles of ancient Judah and as such represent their interests and ethos. In other words, rather than being an inspired text and revelation from God, the Bible was written by rich men to oppress women and the poor. It seems that all the scholars seem to think that in order to be scholarly, they have to approach everything from a naturalistic perspective and reduce things down to a strictly human level, completely disregarding the work of the Holy Spirit in the process.
