Ive only seen a couple Greta Garbo movies. Grand Hotel is great, but its really not her movie. I recall watching another one a long time ago and I wasnt impressed. I think I saw Ninotchka? I watched Romance last night. She was nominated for an Oscar for this portrayal of an opera singer with a sordid past. Im curious what people think of her, but I think shes pretty terrible. At least in this movie. Shes stunning to look at and there are moments where she does have a star quality about her, but at least in 1930, she still seems struggling to speak English and is still acting in a broad silent movie style. The fact that this movie is nothing more than a filmed stage play, with a dated story of a minister falling in love with a woman whose given away her virtue, doesnt help. Gavin Gordon performance as the tortured minister is so stiff and lifeless, its no wonder he never became a leading man. Interested to hear what people think of the great Garbo. When you compare her to the other big female stars of the day, Stanwyck, Crawford, even Norma Sherer, she just seems so dated. Am I missing something? I will say that Clarence Browns direction does have a flair to it.
