Ive posted this question on facebook before, but I kinda feel like touching on it again to see if theres any other input from my musical friends in facebook land: So almost everyone agrees that pirating music is bad for a variety of reasons; some people equate it with stealing, others say it hurts the bands that make the music, etc. But what about having songs and even entire albums uploaded to youtube or other video hosting sites? Its rare that you cant find a song you want to listen to posted to youtube, and in todays age of technology and especially smartphones, being able to easily access and play music, not only without paying for it, but without downloading and saving anything is effectively the same as having freely available pirated music, but in reality no one who is listening has actually pirated anything. The music has been uploaded to a site for free listening with nothing given to the bands in exchange, but nothing is downloaded and saved as a file for personal use afterward, although people are still able to access and listen to it freely. Does this seem equivalent to pirating music or is it somehow different? And if so, how? Should the bands have a problem with their music being posted for listening without their consent, even though no one has pirated anything? And yes, Im aware you can rip audio from youtube, but that defeats the point Im asking about, because then you HAVE downloaded (read: pirated) the music, and have saved it as a file on your own computer, rather than having accessed it from an online streaming database without downloading anything.
