Ive posted this weeks Monday Minute, an additional effort of the Lake Elsinore church of Christ. If you would like to receive the Monday Minute in your inbox each week, please let me know! - Leland Commitment and complacency start with the same three letters but their similarities stop there. One describes what God cherishes in us and the other what He despises in us. Even though they are polar opposites, if we’re not careful, we’ll allow ourselves to be “tricked” into believing we are committed and dedicated when in fact we are complacent and derelict in our Christian duties. When the young man asked Jesus what was necessary to be pleasing to the Lord, Jesus said to keep the commandments which, in truthfulness, the young man admitted he had, “kept from his youth.” Yet, when the Savior had told Him to sell his possessions (which were many) we learn that the young man, “went away sorrowful” (Matthew 19:16-22). So here’s the question: Was the young man committed or complacent? The answer is obvious. But what is equally obvious is that we can think of ourselves (like the young man did) as faithful, pleasing, and committed when, in fact, when we are actually complacent. Now be honest with yourself… When it comes to the local church, are you committed or complacent? Is attendance at all services your priority or do you simply attend when convenient? When it comes to Jesus Christ, are you committed or complacent? Are you spiritually minded in your habits, activities, and conversations part of the time but other times you allow yourself to grow lax and become complacent and lazy in your faith? The answers that you come up with may not make you “feel good,” but those same answers may very well assist you in becoming more committed to Christ who deserves nothing less.
