Ive read many similar stories before, but now that its happened to me, it feels so much more real! Today we bought a new sandpit frame for our 2 boys (2.5 and nearly 5 years old), and got 4 bags of sand for it. The instructions said it needed to be filled with 10 bags. So we asked our eldest, Joshua, how many more bags we needed to get. Without batting an eyelid, he just said 6. I asked: How do you know that?. Because I know maths!. Well obviously he does, but not because weve taught him any maths, or given him math-oriented games or toys! We dont even usually quiz him on math problems at all, this was a very isolated event. Hes never before showed the ability to do substractions or additions, but it has come to him just as naturally as learning to use the past tense (the youngest ones latest achievement, just last night!) when he speaks. Knowing what I know about how children learn (naturally and instinctively), I shouldnt be surprised, but I was!
