Ive seen lots of posts regarding the use of retard and why we should exclude it from our vocabulary. I think these posts are misguided. While were at it, lets get rid of idiot, moron, feeble-minded and whatever other terms that were once used to officially describe them. The context of their usage is the problem and not the words themselves. I would have no problem talking about some guy who drove like an idiot today. That doesnt mean Im referring to him as a developmentally delayed person, Im referring to the fact that for the task he attempted to do, he displayed no intelligence whatsoever. In fact there are many ways a developmentally delayed person could show more intelligence, than said driver. In addition, we all do dumb things and occasionally call ourselves idiots and whatever derogatory term you choose to insert. To conclude, labelling developmentally delayed individuals as having no intelligence is a misnomer, the word retard and its variants imply something completely different and they should.
