Ive seen multiple people say that firing Lovie Smith and hiring Marc Trestman was a mistake, and that was proven by the team winning 10 games and missing the playoffs the year before under Smith, and winning only 8 games and missing the playoffs last season under Trestman. We need to put things into perspective when we talk about that, because Lovie took over a 7-9 team and went 5-11 in his first season with the Bears, two less victories than the year before, just like last year under Trestman. The main difference between Lovie and Trestman: offense. Lovies inability to hire the right offensive coordinator and the Bears ineptitude on offense during his tenure was borderline criminal. Lets take a look at Bears offenses under Lovie Smith, shall we? Terry Shea - 32nd ranked offense with an anemic 238 yards per game. Ron Turner presided over the best offense in the Lovie Smith era. In 2006 the Bears were 15th with 324 yards per game. Not exactly electric, but effective. Mike Martz - offense ranked 24th (314 ypg) in 2011, and 30th (289 ypg) in 2010. Mike Tice - 28th ranked offense, 310 yards per game. Year ONE under Trestman - 7th ranked offense (#2 scoring offense), 382.3 yards per game, with two different quarterbacks Trestman is known for protecting his quarterbacks and putting them in the best positions to be effective, as evidenced by Chicago going from 25th in fewest sacks allowed in 2012 with 44 under Lovie, to 4th in fewest sacks allowed last season with only 30 under Trestman, and thats with two rookies starting on the line and running a new offense. Theres no reason at all to believe that the line shouldnt be even better this year with those guys having more experience under their belts. In the four years under Lovie Smith since trading for Cutler, the Bears allowed an average of 46 sacks per season, thats damn near three per game and is totally unacceptable. With the additions the Bears have made on defense through free agency and the draft, all we really need them to be is adequate defensively, and let their high powered offense do the rest. In Trestman I trust.
