Ive seen so many negative attitudes towards Darkest Hours new album since it came out. It upsets me because I feel like this album is one of their bests (minus Deliver Us and Undoing Ruin) because of how diverse they went from who they started out. This evolution should have been seen coming since Undoing Ruin came out. This album oozes a Dream Theater/Devin Townsend vibe, but since most of the hardcore metalz community sees clean singing or syncopated rhythms as Poppy-New Age Garbage. Go back and listen to DEATH METAL bands like Atheist and Messuggah and youll see its the new ideas that they had to expand the genre that gave us bands like Veil of Maya with insane technical guitar riffs and Periphery with its chordal style and accentuating popularity of the Djent style. Darkest Hour isnt getting softer to match up with the popular crowd, theyre drawing from the influences that these old school bands, who were together when they STARTED DARKEST HOUR, and incorporating that into their heavy Hardcore Thrash styling of what was popular when they were kids in the mid 90s Hardcore scene. Also, they are musicians and their own people. They sat down to create something they thought was amazing enough to maybe impress a few kids. They dont owe you shit. Theyre making music; an incredibly expressive ART. They make what they want, based on ideas or concepts that they themselves feel is how they should progress. Want a Thrashy Darkest Hour? Listen to Hidden Hands. Want a Hardcore Darkest Hour? Listen to Mark of the Judas. Want a Death Metal Darkest Hour? Listen to The Eternal Return. Want a Melo-Death Darkest Hour? Listen to Deliver Us. Want a new-age Darkest Hour? Listen to the new album.
