Ive seen talk on Facebook today about kids being out for MLK Day - TopicsExpress

Ive seen talk on Facebook today about kids being out for MLK Day and thought I should comment on this. Take it or leave it here it is. We definitely should have a day for Martin Luther King Jr. I think we should honor all those who have made a historical difference for our country and possibly the world. HOWEVER, as much as I enjoyed my time with my kids, I DO NOT think they should have the day off. Yes my youngest learned about MLK on Friday, but today could have been used as extra teaching time on MLK. It also saddens me that my daughters middle school didnt take advantage of this time to talk about MLK. I may not know MLK personally, but I dont think he really would want to take an educational day from our children. He would want all of our children to be learning side by side, about our past struggles and future dreams together. On another note Ive also seen some posts about the upcoming Black History month. A lot of people wondering why we have to have a month for them, or why we dont have a White History month. To this, I say to you, did you not learn ANYTHING in your History or Social Studies classes?!? We, as humans, have learned more about our white history than any other culture. Taking one month out of the year is not a bad thing. Until all of Black, Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern, NATIVE AMERICAN, and so on, are equally in more specific detail taught, I am fine with ethnic historic months. Now off my soapbox.
