Ive spent the past two weekends driving around the Deep South. Ive been to rock clubs, bbq joints, dirt tracks, modern fusion restaurants, nice dinners at the homes of academics, Wal-Marts, Econo-Lodges, book stores, coffee shops, convenience stores, liquor stores, record shops, grocery stores in towns both big and small ... You name it. None of it has really changed my city-dwellers view that this modern rural romanticism concerning country life and the Heartland is kinda bullshit. I mean, the sticks is certainly not the source of our finest thinking in the 21st century, is it? But a little while ago, I passed a home in a small town in southern Mississippi where the evenings entertainment seemed to consist of sitting in plastic chairs, drinking a cold beer and watching a stump burn. Then I remembered ... Things really arent that black and white, are they?
