Ive worked with some of the poorest, most troubled, and disruptive - TopicsExpress

Ive worked with some of the poorest, most troubled, and disruptive teenage boys in Nassau. What was mainly taught to them is that you are responsible for yourself, stop blaming others for your actions. Almost everyone Ive met believes this and says this, which is true, but to a far less extent than we make it out be. When someone is violently robbed, its not just the fault of the kid out hustling trying to give a little something to his single mother, its your fault, all our fault, societys. Rape culture is not upheld by one man which makes rapists feel like rape is okay because she was dressed like a slut. Nor are people responsible for their poverty, who are given no choice but to hustle if they want to survive. If you say we all have an equal opportunity in this world, I will personally slap you so hard with history books. High unemployment, vast inequality of wealth, broken families, creates a thousand times more crime than a naturally born malicious person. You really think throwing a human being in a filthy, over-crowded, shit smelling, unbearably hot cage, surrounded by other talkative criminals, to be raped and rot, solves crime? How humane of you to breed more angry and better criminals. Ive gone on a tour of Her Majestys prison and even a prison guard said that the place is no rehabilitation center. We are the product of our culture, The Bahamas being a highly materialist culture, with the lives of super rich tourists advertised all around us. All we do is punish the poor for being poor who dare ask for more, and when we refuse them the basic needs so they can live, they commit crime and we say, You put yourself in prison! Accept responsibility! You really think that more Police, more over crowed prison cells, state sanctioned murder, giving non-violent drug offenders no bail, is going to make The Bahamas a safer place to live? Why not try better social education, stronger communities instead of kids choosing stronger gangs, stop supporting the idea that having multiple children for multiple different women makes you a cool player. Kids can only avoid fights, hunger, lack of clothes, and hustling for so long. If you want the criminal youth to blame themselves, dont be a hypocrite and blame yourself for every murder or robbery news headline. Stop blaming others cause they didnt vote for your political party. Stop giving away your power to make your country a better place, to the people in power. We all need to be responsible for ourselves, but we also all live on the same rock together, affected by the same social ills. When a problem arises for one, it arises for us all. So it is only reasonable that the answers lies with is all, through a collective effort.
