Ive written (again) to Scott Morrison. Being keen to separate my email from the many he must receive I titled it This is not an attack, but an encouragement. See what you think. Dear Scott I have been watching the news this week with great alarm. I would guess this has been one of the worst weeks of your life, with one dead, others injured, and countless more fearful of being harmed… and the buck stopping with your role. It cant be easy to be part of a political system where party loyalty is a higher principle than personal conscience. May I encourage you to look to your heart on this and not be influenced by what seems like a short term fix to allay the fears than some Australians have about invasion of asylum seekers. While I share the concerns of those who seek to maintain the freedoms and rights of our great country, I cannot agree with the course of action. I feel embarrassed and ashamed that our international reputation for being people who will give any a fair go, is in the process of being tarnished. However i dont think its too late. This death can be a turning point in LNP Policy, and you could be an international hero by making a stand for compassion now. History could record how, shocked by the results of the offshore processing system, you discovered that compassion trumped fear, and publicly declared your desire to find a humane solution that respects our countries and laws, yet does not deny the rights of the desperate, and their children. Especially their children. Scott, I feel for you. It must be a lonely job, and quite thankless at times. But I hope that in all of this, you realize there is a vast body of Australians who would join you in saying no more… not in my name. May I encourage you to muster up the moral courage to take a stand now, before more lives are lost. History will thank you, and Australians can again hold their head high and be proud of the actions of this great country. Kind regards Sue Hamlet
