I’ll posit that SNL’s humor is so character heavy, that its unsurprising for it to have an all white cast. In Darrell Hammond’s Fresh Air interview, he talked about how this type of comedy (like his Clinton) is derived from imitation that takes into account nuance and affectation, and then just pushing it over some unique edge of the actor’s choosing. White performers have had the last decades to spend observing others and perfecting their imitations, while performers of color have had to spend that same time carving out our own identities so as to “not get lost” (see article). Not that we’re not good imitators, but people laugh hardest at Margaret Cho when she’s playing her mom. In all seriousness, my Irish and Southern accents are way better than my Mandarin one, so, casting directors, holler at your girl.
