I’m always a bit skeptical when I sit down with a journalist and try to explain some piece of my life. Many of the overworked and newer reporters can really butcher reality, but the pros get it right. Here’s a good story by Olga Peters of The Commons newspaper in Brattleboro, Vermont. She wrote about my involvement in the Vermont Yankee nuclear project, and synthesized this complex topic really well. I originally became involved in the VY project as a Regional Planning Commissioner when the owner of this aging nuclear plant sought approval for extended operations beyond its original 40 year term. That process focused attention on the need for communities to prepare for the plant’s eventual shutdown, which is now expected to occur on or about December 29, 2014. I wish I could say that our efforts will result in a quick clean-up of the site, but unfortunately Entergy Corporation, the owner of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Station, plans to let the plant rot for many decades with an apparent hope that the company will never need to kick in a nickel to clean-up its own mess. It’s going to be a long-term slog, and much of that is due to the nuclear industry’s coopting of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to serve its own interests, rather than the interests of the public. This is an embarrassing legacy for my generation to leave behind. I’m sorry kids. commonsnews.org/site/site05/story.php?articleno=11224&page=1
