I’m not going away… When something or someone rubs us the wrong way, we think we can just choose to ignore it. We pay the person or subject no mind at all, allowing our thoughts to leave it in the deep recesses of our minds, forgetting all about the eventual implications of our avoidance in the matter. We can even do this when it comes to living the life that is pleasing to our God. We seem to pick and choose the things we like about being a Christian, and the others that we don’t care for, we place in the corner, never to be seen or heard from again. We may glance in the corner at times, realizing these attributes are not popular, not profitable or not widely accepted, so we leave them in the corner. The problem is caused when we eventually stop seeing them, and our God becomes a bit confused. He wants us to be aware of His life for us, His commandments that were given to us long ago. God is not going away. “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.” Joshua 1:5(NKJV) In the Old Testament, there are plenty of instances where God demonstrates His love for His people. God chose to show us just how much He cares for our well-being. With this, He also gives us a set of rules we need to live by. He was not just telling us these things and having us choose to mull them over and make our decisions. He wanted His people to live these things out loud. “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:8-9 In return for living a life that is laid out for us by our God, He promises us good things in return. He promises to be there for us regardless of the circumstance. The only requirement on our part is to obey and follow His plan for our “prosperous” life. But the trick is following His plan. When God’s rules seem too hard or too tough to follow, we begin to pick and choose. We start a pile in the corner of those things we feel are not going enhance our lives or make things easier for us. We ignore those rules that seem to be unpopular or not self-centered, only following those that make us the center of attention, or improve our lives dramatically. We soon forget that God is still playing by His rules, and He is watching us ignore Him. When He promises to “never leave nor forsake” us, He means it. He does not shove us in a corner because we are being difficult. He does not put us in “time out” because we are not listening. God is aware of every thought we think, every move we make. We can’t pick and choose our own rules for our lives. God is not going away, and to be honest, we do not want God to leave us in the shape we are in. “in the world, not of the world”
