I’ve been looking at this page for the last week almost daily, reading all the wonderful stories and looking at all the beautiful memories. I’ve been hesitant to write anything because this page feels so personal, and while I knew Doug, I didn’t know him as well as all of you. Doug was one of my fabric reps, I saw him periodically, emailed back and forth for appointments, and on a rare occasion when we did speak after or before a fabric showing, we spoke about our families and our love for our dogs. He was always super high energy, a little loud, but never brash, just really fun. Our team always liked interacting with him because he always cracked us up. Once, he came by for a quick visit but happened to have his baby boy with him, Dylan must have been about three. He brought him in to show him off, and the entire office, primarily females, all cooed and melted at the sight of his beautiful boy. He just beamed, it was the sweetest. On another occasion after a showing, he mentioned he had his pups in the car, so I immediately made a beeline to meet them. It seemed like whenever he spoke about something dear to him, his wife, his son, or his dogs, he said it like he was talking about something so sacred and beautiful. In the last few years, he had shared with us some of his struggles. When he would leave, we would all look at each other and always remark, “… and yet he seems so happy despite everything.” Last Monday, when my co-worker emailed our group and told us of his passing, my heart just sank. We had just exchanged some emails a couple of days prior, planning his next visit. I had inquired about the family and he said everyone was happy and Dylan was turning eight in a few days! Even in his email his warmth and excitement seemed palpable. In an industry where schmoozing is somewhat the norm, Doug was one of the few people I didn’t mind talking to and whom I genuinely liked because he himself was genuine. Even the few people in the office who never interacted with him directly remember him greeting them and his general happy demeanor. Our hearts are a little heavier knowing we won’t see that smile or hear that laugh again, but we are happy to have had the pleasure to know him. Our thoughts are with Christine and Dylan, stay strong. We’ll miss you Dougie!
