I’ve driven past the former San Jose Mercury News HQ (visible from 880 @ Brokaw) hundreds—likely a few thousand—of times. And over the last few years, I’ve been increasingly intrigued by the sculpture that hangs within the portico in front. After reading that the property had sold a few months back to SuperMicro, I knew I had to make my visit happen soon. Last week I noticed a crane behind the building and figured demolition is on the horizon, so I finally visited the site yesterday. I was delighted by the amazing brutalist form with its curvy metal shapes. It’s a challenge to capture it in its entirety—it’s huge and surrounded by pillars—but the sculpture is both lyrical and serious, hard and soft. There was no plaque giving credit to the artist, but I’d love to know who he/she is. If anyone has any information about this sculpture, please share! The sculpture is still there (as of 12/28), so if you’re interested in getting a closer look, visit soon! Thanks.
