Jackson (562.818.7585) Event: 3/22/14 6 p.m. - 10 p.m., 1422 Engracia Street Torrance 91 Year Old Hope Foye Honored as “Woman of the Century” 91 Year old classical opera singer Hope Foye will be honored as “Woman of the Century” at a charity event March 22, 2014 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the Torrance Womens Club (a historic opera house building) 1422 Engracia Street, Torrance. The Womens History Month event will feature presentations and performance art highlighting “women throughout the centuries.” African American Hope Foye was an early activist in the civil rights movement, a friend and colleague of such notables as singers Paul Robeson and Pete Seeger, writer-composer Shirley Graham and Grahams husband, NAACP co-Founder and scholar W.E.B. DuBois. The subject of 2011 Pan African Film Festival Best Documentary Red Hope: The Blacklisting of Hope Foye, when “McCarthyite” persecution and blacklisting destroyed her career, she literally went into exile with the assistance of Graham and “Hollywood 10” member Albert Maltz.
