J.S. Bach, the famous Eb major Prelude from a short suite of pieces for the Lute. Rendered here on the 11-string Alto guitar in transcription by Per Olaf-Johnson. This is a concert piece, and in my opinion the most resplendent moment in the entire Baroque lute literature. This Prelude, with its incredibly inventive harmonies and satisfying counterpoints lends itself well to a resonant instrument such as the lute or the modern multi-string guitar. My own slightly unorthodox interpretation empashizes complex chordal resonances in the upper registers, where opportunities for arpeggiated figures played campanella, or in a bell-like style, are many and various. Thats where I employ a rather controversial rubato style. In those moments the sympathetic vibrations from the bass strings adds a lot of foundation. I hope you enjoy it.
