(J.W.) Years ago I asked my father what hed been up to. His response surprised me, since hes usually cheerful during family gatherings. Seems like weve just been going to funerals recently. Now that Im in my 50s I understand the feeling. A lot of friends from my school days are dying unexpectedly or facing significant health problems of their own or their parents. It can put one in a morbid state of mind. Things like end of life counseling, living wills and withholding care in extreme cases were seen as evidence of death panels a few years ago, but Im all for keeping those options open. Here in Germany physician assisted suicide is legal, although that might change. Religious groups and the ruling party Christian Democracy Now!ts are concerned that doctors are profiteering off of vulnerable patients.
