J.Wests Sassy finally calved, seems she was waiting for Christmas Day!! Ive been expecting her to calve for days, and held my breath when I found her trying to calve late this morning and said a prayer to the sky that all would be well. And it was! I stood there in the pasture a distance away just waiting for it to happen, expecting the worst because shed been so full of baby for days . . . stood their waiting, thinking about how much time to give her, that I needed to get back to the house to suit up for a pull, planning the best route to direct her to the pens from her pasture . . . and finally she laid down and pushed . . . and all was well on this Christmas Day. The oddest thing happened though, likely 2/3rds of the herd gathered around her and the calf, cows not heifers, generally they arent terribly interested until the calf is a day or so old, and certainly dont gather in a mob around the newborn even then. Im thinking this a special heifer, and of course shell be named Christmas!
