JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Police are searching for a missing 63-year-old Newport News man who may be suicidal. Just after 8 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Colonial Parkway after National Park Service rangers found an abandoned vehicle and clothing along the James River shoreline. The vehicle was a 2001 Blue Volvo registered to Patrick James Downing. His sister told officers Downing is bi-polar and had stopped taking medication two months ago, according to Deputy Chief Stephen Rubino with the James City County Police Department. Investigators learned the last known contact with Downing happened last week, and that he had contacted a funeral home to make arrangements for his funeral. State and local police, park rangers and the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries searched the area on foot and by boat, but couldn’t find Downing. The search was suspended around 12:30 p.m. Downing is described as a white man, 5-foot-8, 180 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.
