JAN 19-This Day in Entertainment & Pop Music History: -January 19th is the anniversary of the passing four pretty well known pop music performers: Rock-a-billy singer, (and Beatles idol), Carl Perkins died on this day in 1998. Legendary soul singer Wilson Pickett died in 2006. Denny Doherty, the vocalist on several Mamas & Papas hits including California Dreamin and Monday Monday, died in 2007. And, former Kingston trio member John Stewart died on this day in 2008. Stewart was best known for writing The Monkees hit, Daydream Believer, and performing his own big hit song called Gold....1957-Pop singer Pat Boone performed at the White House on the night before President Dwight Eisenhowers inauguration. (The joint must have been rocking!)...1959-Dick Clarks American Bandstand was the number-one daytime TV show in the USA...1967-As the character called Pussycat, singer Lesley Gore appeared as Catwomans sidekick on ABC-TVs Batman. Gore sang her hit, California Nights...1971-At the Charles Manson murder trial, the court heard the Beatles recording of Helter Skelter. Manson claimed to have heard secret messages in the music that led him to order the murders of actress Sharon Tate and others...1976-The Beatles turned down a 30 million dollar offer from a promoter to reunite...1977-At the pre-inauguration party for Jimmy Carter, the Charlie Daniels Band and Aretha Franklin performed for the newly elected president...1993-On the night before he was sworn in, Fleetwood Mac got back together to play for President-elect, Bill Clinton...1985-Ozzy Osbourne and AC/DC were among the performers who played a concert in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in front of 342,000 heavy metal fans...1994-An impressive list of new inductees were brought into the rock and roll hall of fame on this day. The list was headed by the late John Lennon, (Yoko Ono, Johns son Sean and Paul McCartney were in attendance). Also inducted were Bob Marley, Rod Stewart, the Grateful Dead, Elton John, the Animals, the Band, and guitarist Duane Eddy...2001-It was reported that Paul McCartney was about to become the world’s first pop music star billionaire, (depending on the currency you choose to recognize). In the UK, McCartney was said to be worth £725 million British pounds, (roughly $1,233 million U.S dollars at that time). McCartney was expected to become an official billionaire after huge sales from the Beatles compilation hits album. (It was the biggest selling CD of the decade, reaching No.1 in 35 countries).
