JASMINE HILL GARDENS REACHES PEAK BLOOM A canopy of fluttering Japanese cherry blossoms create an inviting passage into a different world when Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum reach peak bloom. Add masses of azaleas, camellias, dogwoods, tulips, pansies, wisteria, Carolina jasmine, and many colorful annuals and you really are transported into a different world of beauty. As visitors stroll along native stone walkways past fountains and floral focal points, they can only be impressed with what nature provides to central Alabama each spring. Although the peak is somewhat later than normal because of the unusually cold winter weather, it has never been prettier. Visitors are provided a walking tour map with descriptions of over forty special points of interest. With a focus on ancient Greek culture, statuary depicts ancient Olympians from a discus thrower, to wrestlers and runners. Many of these athletes are in sight of the world’s only full scale reproduction of the ruins of the Temple of Hera as found in Olympia, Greece, where the Olympic Flame is started. Other bronze and marble statues are copies of famous works of art found in some of the world’s most prestigious museums. The visitor center displays castings made from molds taken from the original statues, so they are exact in every detail when compared with the originals. Many student tours take place in the spring. A tour of Jasmine Hill completes the classroom studies for 6th graders from throughout Alabama who have a required course in Greek and Roman studies. Admission is charged, but ample parking is provided free. Staff guided group tours for twenty or more guests may be arranged in advance at no extra charge. Jasmine Hill is open for weekend visits with Friday and Saturday hours from 9 AM to 5 PM through June. From July through October, the gardens will be open on Saturdays from 9 AM to 5 PM. The gardens are conveniently located just north of Montgomery off U. S. Highway 231 on Jasmine Hill Road.
