JCCC has plenty of activities next week in honor of Veterans day - JCCC Celebrates Veterans Week November 10-14, 2014 Event Schedule Monday, Nov. 10 Veteran and Military Student Resource Center grand opening reception. 10 a.m.–1 p.m., COM 305 10 a.m. Ribbon Cutting Come and celebrate our official grand opening with JCCC veteran students and administration, as well as, dignitaries from the community. Refreshments provided by US Army Recruiting Battalion. Tuesday, Nov. 11 Ron Stinson, JCCC professor, instrumental music, plays Taps at 11 a.m. on the hill in the Commons Courtyard. Immediately following, Ed Smith, JCCC research program coordinator, American Indian Health Research and Education Alliance will perform a veterans’ song. Lunch in honor of JCCC faculty and staff who have served in the military will be at noon in the Capitol Federal Conference Center of the Regnier Center. Veterans and military service members may pick up vouchers for a free drink (coffee, tea, or soft drink) from the Veteran and Military Student Resource Center in COM 305. Thank you gift bags for veterans and military service members are available at the JCCC branch office of US Bank. Wednesday, Nov. 12 Polsky Practical Series – Combat Arts presentation – Elizabeth Washburn, artist, art educator, and founder of Combat Arts, has been making art with service members since 2007. She will discuss the process and outcomes of her work with veterans. 7 p.m., Hudson Theater in the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art Thursday, Nov. 13 The JCCC English Department will present a showing of the documentary “Coming Back with Wes Moore”. Best-selling author and US army veteran Wes Moore tells intimate stories of veterans returning from war. A question and answer session with JCCC Veteran students will follow the film. 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Craig Community Auditorium (GEB 233). Friday, Nov. 14 Dr. Jay Antle will present Posters of Persuasion: American Propaganda Posters and the Two World Wars. A retrospective of the “art of persuasion” of posters from WWI and WWII. 2–3 p.m., Craig Community Auditorium (GEB 233) Honor Tree Beginning Nov. 3, an honor tree will be set up in the Student Center lobby. Tie a ribbon on the honor tree as a silent way to say “thank you.” Ribbons and notecards will be available to honor service members and veterans. White ribbon: in memory of a family/friend who gave/lost their life in service Blue ribbon: in honor of a family friend who is serving Yellow ribbon: general support and thanks to all veterans and service members Black ribbon: in recognition of someone who was a POW/MIA Red ribbon: You are a JCCC student or community member currently serving or who has served Purple ribbon: in honor of Purple Heart recipients Other Activities and Displays Monday, Nov 10th through Friday Nov. 14 “The War Within: The Veteran Suicide Epidemic”. An exhibit that serves as a stark, powerful reminder of the psychological impact of war. Presented in the Carlsen Center Lobby. In conjunction with the display, JCCC Active Minds Club will provide information regarding mental health and suicide awareness. Tuesday, Nov. 11 through Thursday Nov. 23 “Remembering Our Fallen: a Photo Exhibit of Kansas’ Fallen” on display in the Billington Library first floor lobby. A very emotional exhibit, “Remembering Our Fallen,” is a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by over 70 Kansans killed in The War on Terror while wearing our country’s uniform in Afghanistan or Iraq.
