JENNIFER COLLINS WRITES-I had an incident yesterday that was likely the most frightening thing thats ever happened to me as a parent. Miss Lilly and I had just left a restaurant where wed met Shane and Jordan for lunch. After we ate, they each left separately in their trucks and Miss Lilly was in the backseat of my car riding with me. We had literally just left and had probably only been in the car and driving for about a minute when a white car sped up right beside me, and the man driving was honking his horn, yelling and motioning for me to stop. I had no idea who he was or what he wanted and I was beyond confused as to what was going on. As he was getting out of his car and running over towards us, I honestly thought I was about to either be the victim of some sort of misplaced road rage or possibly even an attempted carjacking. Although my doors were locked and I didnt think he could get to us, the next thing I knew he was pulling open the back door on my side of the car. My first thought was that he was trying to grab Miss Lilly, yet I was so scared that I couldnt even process what was happening, let alone discern what to do next. By that point, I was trembling and in absolute shock. As fast as he opened the door though, he just as quickly slammed it shut. I was in the process of lowering my window while this was taking place, and he said to me, Im so sorry to scare you, Miss. I mean you no harm, I just noticed that your car door was open and that there was a child in the back seat. I didnt want to risk something happening and her being hurt. Sigh. Ive never in my life felt that kind of relief! Never. He was a dark-haired man, probably in his mid-thirties, nicely dressed in a suit and tie and hardly the picture of a stereotypical madman preying on innocent women and children. Instead of being a crazed motorist or thief, he was actually just a good Samaritan doing a kind deed. I was too stunned to do anything more than utter a relieved, Oh, thank you! as he ran back to his car. Its a shame that my immediate response was fear, but sadly, in this day and age, its often more likely for someone to attempt to cause someone harm than it is for one to reach out and offer a helping hand. Thankfully for us, my daughter and I were on the receiving end of a rare and random act of kindness rather than a common and random act of violence. Grateful.
