JICA shares importance of ‘Learning from past experience’ on Disasters among school teachers in Galle & Matara Districts JICA felicitates about 100 teachers in 14 pilot schools of the JICA Partnership Project for “Promotion of Sustainable Disaster Mitigation Education and Trauma Counseling Project” who actively participated in the project activities. The project was aimed at disseminating the combination of Disaster Mitigation Education and Trauma counseling among 14 selected schools in Galle & Matara districts. To understand well about the phenomena of the disaster, scientific and logical explanations are required for the children in schools to be safe from disasters. Collaborating with the “Technical Cooperation for Landslide Mitigation Project” and the “Project for Improving of Meteorological Observation, Weather Forecasting and Dissemination”, Mr. Handa and Mr. Ishihara delivered the lectures on how Japan raises the awareness about disasters among children. With the philosophy of “Learning from Past Disaster Experiences”, teachers acquired the tips and insights how to teach children on Disaster Mitigation. Among the school principals and teachers who participated in this event, Mr. R A Kariyawasam , Principal of Shariputhra Vidyalaya Ahangama expressed his views as follows. “At present there are only very few students who have experienced 2004 Tsunami, but with the implementation of this project we were able to educate children a lot about disasters and their parents also upto a certain extent”. I think that the concepts about disasters should not be limited to secondary and upper classes but should be included to Primary educations as well.”
