JIHAD FIGHTING IS FOR DEFENSE ONLY & NO AGRESSION IN ISLAM .. BY SHEIKH MUHAMMAD ABDUH • Imam Muhammad Abduh the grand late Egyptian edict & Mufti & top scholar (1846-1905) has clarified that Quran completely prohibits aggression & confines fighting to self & right defense only. Quran verse 2; 190 وَقَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّـهِ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ وَاقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ ثَقِفْتُمُوهُمْ وَأَخْرِجُوهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ أَخْرَجُوكُمْ translation is Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors & (if fighting & killing starts in battle), then kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you,” • Quran not only prohibits aggression & confines fighting to defense only , but also instructed justice in the defense & retribution , thus commanded Muslims to return the assault by only an equivalent assault & not beyond this , so if someone pushes you or hit you , then you only push or hit him in equivalence & no more .. Verse 2; 194 “فَمَنِ اعْتَدَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاعْتَدُوا عَلَيْهِ بِمِثْلِ مَا اعْتَدَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ ““So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you “ . Also Quran commanded that Muslims are to cease their defense fighting when their attackers cease, Verse 2; 193 “فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا فَلَا عُدْوَانَ إِلَّا عَلَى الظَّالِمِينَ”, translation is “if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors. • About Sura 9 (Al Tawba ) which some claim that it commands fighting non muslims sura 9;29 , قَاتِلُوا الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّـهِ وَلَا بِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ اللَّـهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَلَا يَدِينُونَ دِينَ الْحَقِّ مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا الْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَاغِرُونَ translation is Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture until they give the recompense ( jizyah) willingly while they are humbled ,Imam Muhammad Abduh also answered that it commands this only in condition that the other party dishonors their pact with the Muslims & the Muslims should fight them only until they adhere to their pact once more Quran 9; 7 فَمَا اسْتَقَامُوا لَكُمْ فَاسْتَقِيمُوا لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّقِينَ translation is So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them. Quran stated fighting them only after the other party dishonored their pact 9; 13 أَلَا تُقَاتِلُونَ قَوْمًا نَّكَثُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ وَهَمُّوا بِإِخْرَاجِ الرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ, translation is Would you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? . • Quran also clearly protects the full right of belief freedom& does not allow any fighting or oppression aiming to coerce non muslims to enter Islam ,Verse 2; 256 لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ translation is “no compulsion in the religion. • Quran does not only prohibit aggression, but it also encourages Muslims to maintain good & fair relations with non-muslims who do not fight Muslims in their religion or expel them from their homes. Quran 60;8 “لَّا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّـهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَارِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوا إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ” The translation is “Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly” • Recapping all above, ALLAH tells the believers that HE has permitted them to fight in the path of ALLAH to defend themselves or enable themselves to worship Allah if they were tortured & prevented from so or fight those who rescind & dishonor their pacts .
