JOAO VILHENA — I/O 13 March > 30 April 2014 Opening 13 March 2014 [Thursday], 6pm > 8pm In Joao Vilhena’s “I/O” thirty-two well known Western art portraits and the explosive phenomenon of ‘Selfies’ come together in a digital photo-montage representation. Photos shared on social media everyday outnumber the world population. In a way “I/O” is an invitation to resume some important topics of the late 19th century and the 20th century aesthetics, notably discovered by Rimbaud (“Je est un autre” / “I is another”), by Walter Benjamin (“The camera introduces us to unconscious optics as does the psychoanalysis to unconscious impulses”) and by Roland Barthes (“ça a été”/ “this-has-been”). The title of the I/O (I and the Other) and the pictures at the exhibition are an invitation to art in this returning time of plagues and miseries.
