JOB OPENING: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF SOUTH HAMPTON ROADS, INC. (HABITAT SHR) EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Status: Full-time Supervisor: Board of Directors Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads (Habitat SHR) is a faith-based, non-profit affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. The Mission of Habitat SHR is to engage our community in building opportunities for qualified families to achieve independence through purchasing an affordable home… Together, we’re Rebuilding the American Dream. The affiliate builds approximately12-14 houses per year at cost, to sell to qualified families and provides as well as manages an interest-free mortgage program for the owners of over 190 locally built Habitat homes. Habitat SHR also runs four retail General Stores that generate Mission-related revenue from the resale of clothing, furnishings, and building materials. Habitat SHR actively solicits financial funding and donations of gifts-in-kind materials from corporate and individual donors, foundations, and government grants. The organization has approximately 50 employees, 20-30 dedicated volunteer leaders, and over the course of a year, hundreds of weekend volunteers that serve in the retail stores, in administrative support positions, and on the building sites. The Executive Director (ED) reports to the Habitat SHR Board of Directors and acts as the affiliate’s senior operations, administrative and philanthropic officer. The ED works with, and under the Board in developing a vision and strategic goals. The ED is responsible for implementing strategic and operational plans and in integrating the work of committees, staff and volunteers into a coherent, consistent, and effective program of advocacy, construction, fundraising, financing, and family support resulting in successful home ownership for participant families. Additionally, the ED oversees the operations of the retail General Stores, the material gifts-in-kind solicitation program, government and private foundation grant programs, and all corporate, foundation, and individual donations. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: A. Develop and Implement Strategies to meet the Mission: Work with the Board and committees to develop and maintain strategies that maximize the long-term effectiveness of the Habitat SHR Mission Create and maintain a strategic focus on Mission attainment Actively participate in Board and Executive Committee meetings; additionally, provide administrative support through staff Work with the staff, Treasurer, and Board Chair in preparation, development, and management of the annual budget Implement Board-approved plans in accordance with the annual budget Identify resources needed to achieve goals; design approaches and plans to secure them B. Perform as senior Operating Manager: Foster an environment with a sharp focus on Mission attainment Champion cost containment, promote efficiencies, and embrace cost saving alternatives Directly oversee, through respective Directors, the operations of the Construction, Donated Goods and Retail Departments Directly oversee, through respective Directors, the management of Marketing & Development, Family Services, and Real Estate & Government functions Directly oversee Human Resources and Employee Relations, to include: - The safety and the maintenance of a professional workplace environment for all employees and volunteers - The adherence to all personnel policies, procedures and best practices and all applicable government compliance and regulations - Training of staff to ensure that all volunteers, donors, and customers are treated with respect and courtesy Directly oversee, through the Director of Finance, the affiliate’s finances, to include: - Timely preparation and accuracy of all financial and budgetary reports - Adherence to all financial best practices, reporting, and compliance requirements - Providing financial analyses as requested by the Board and affiliate staff Oversee the recruiting, hiring, development, and management of all staff personnel Ensure maximum use and encouragement of volunteers in construction, retail, and administrative functions in the interest of community participation and cost control C. Perform as senior Development Manager: Serve as the chief spokesperson for the affiliate, effectively communicating the affiliate’s mission, goals, and commitments while displaying a high level of professionalism at all times Provide leadership, visibility, and highest representation of the Habitat Mission to the community in order to drive development Champion and support, by personal commitment and actions, all Development initiatives Work with the Development Director to establish a robust Development Plan that meets or exceeds budgetary goals Work with the Board President to engage and leverage the Board in the support of the Development Plan Proactively engage, in concert with the Development Director, key donors, sponsors,corporations and government entities while taking the lead with Major Gifts Maintain key donor relationships effectively and in a timely manner to ensure appropriate donor stewardship on an ongoing basis Other Duties Assigned: Act as chief steward in the protection and promotion of the Habitat brand Being accountable to all stakeholders Manage all staff and implementation processes and hold individual staff members accountable for team cooperation and performance Promote the success of partner families in all phases of their Habitat experience, from receipt of their applications to productive long-term home ownership, using staff and volunteers as appropriate to monitor, assist, and intervene Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with Habitat for Humanity International,Habitat for Humanity Virginia, local and state government agencies, and other affordable housing entities Ensure representation, as necessary, at meetings of city and county governing and planning bodies Communicate the HFH model of home ownership and its volunteers to groups, organizations, and individuals through public speaking and presentations Design ways to bring HFH’s message to the community, with emphasis on businesses, communities of faith, and civic leadership Qualifications: Proven track record of organizational and personnel leadership Strategic thinker with ability to oversee details through management delegation Capable of directing a multi-faceted organization without layers of subordinate management Solid understanding of financial reporting and accountability General management experience should include: ∙ Leadership and management of diverse functions ∙ Successful team builder ∙ Profit and loss responsibilities ∙ Negotiations ∙ Customer care responsibilities ∙ Marketing/sales experience ∙ Ability to take independent action Experience should include one or more: ∙ Fundraising ∙ Habitat or other non-profits ∙ Retail stores ∙ Construction ∙ Volunteer recruiting and management Charismatic leader with ability to inspire others Excellent public speaking/presentation skills High level of integrity and ethics High energy level and drive Willingness to work evenings and weekends to accommodate events and other activities Willingness to travel as needed to meet donors, volunteers, civic leaders, and clients on their terms Proficiency with Microsoft Office software products and, ideally, with donor-based software Bachelor’s degree and, ideally, a graduate degree with a minimum of five years’ experience as a senior manager in the private or public sector; OR an equivalent combination of work experience and education
