JOB POSTING: Development Director National People’s Actionis looking for a Development Director who is ambitious about turning organized money into the power to win transformative changes to our democracy and economy. The Development Director works independently and in close coordination with the Executive Director to fund the organization through a mix of philanthropic institutions and a growing base of engaged online donors. The successful candidate will be a strong writer and a relational individual who has a track record of foundation fundraising success and solid individual and online campaign giving experience. About NPA: National People’s Action is a network of metropolitan, regional and statewide membership organizations that work together to advance a racial and economic justice agenda. NPA has more than 200 organizers and other staff working in cities and towns across the country, and a national staff of twenty, with headquarters in Chicago. NPA builds and strengthens membership-based power organizations, trains community organizers and grassroots leadership, and conducts research and policy analysis to support state and national campaigns designed to create a more racially just, equitable, and sustainable society. About the position: The Development Director will work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop the organization’s strategic plan for resource development. Key tasks will include managing donor relations, preparing grant proposals and reports, and supervising the Development Associate. Responsibilities • Develop ambitious resource program that will advance NPA’s long-­‐term agenda for a just democracy and new economy. • Serve as lead writer of grant proposals and reports to foundations and donors, as well as a pool of well-­‐researched and prepared concept papers. • Partner with the Communications Director to tell a powerful story about NPA and our work through strategic marketing and communications materials. • Support NPA national and affiliate staff to become effective fundraisers. • Build NPA’s individual, online and major donor campaigns. • Advance relationships with current and potential foundations and donors with an enterprising schedule of calls and meetings for the Executive Director, yourself and other national staff. • Conduct prospect research utilizing in-­‐house files, as well as Web and print resources to identify potential funding sources. • Develop a keen understanding of NPA’s programs and campaigns. • Ensure proper maintenance of the NPA Funder Database to track fundraising contacts, monitor deadlines and collect information on potential sources. Qualifications:The ideal candidate is experienced in both organizing and fundraising. Candidates should have: • Eight-­‐plus years of development experience and two-­‐plus years organizing experience with community or union organizing preferred and/or legislative issue advocacy experience • Fluency with online fundraising databases (NPA uses Powerbase civiCRM). • Ability to write well, clearly, quickly and accurately for multiple audiences. • Deep commitment to racial and economic justice and the practice of organizing as a means to achieve change. • Experience and comfort working with multi-­‐racial groups with diverse class backgrounds. • Sense of humor and ability to work with fun, committed and dynamic people. • Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks & responsibilities. • Comfortable working and communicating via email, g-­‐chat, video conferencing, etc. to stay connected with a dispersed staff and affiliate base. • Willingness to put in the hours to get the job done, including some nights and weekends. • Ability to travel at least once a month for funder and donor meetings, NPA events and to provide support to affiliates. Salary and Benefits: Salary is based on experience.
