JOINT PRESS STATEMENT THE LOSS OF LIFE OF MALAWI DEFENCE FORCE SOLDIER LANCE CORPORAL PRINCE LAMECK THE MINISTRIES OF DEFENCE AND HOME AFFAIRS AND INTERNAL SECURITY regret the shooting of a Malawi Defence Force soldier, Lance Corporal Prince Lameck in Zomba on 22nd November, 2014 at around 23:00 Hours by three (3) Malawi Police Service Officers who were on patrol duties which resulted in his death. The two Ministries are strongly condemning the act. As we are all aware, both the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and Malawi Police Service (MPS) provide security in the country and it is very regrettable and unfortunate that a precious life was lost in the course of providing security. The two Ministries wish to condole the bereaved family and appreciate their understanding so far. We further wish to thank the MDF and the entire Malawi Nation; and wish to advise that joint investigations by the MDF and MPS are in progress. We also wish to inform the nation that the three (3) MPS Officers involved are currently in custody awaiting findings of the joint investigations. The two (2) Ministries wish to appeal to the Malawi Police Service to be professional when carrying out its duties. We further wish to advise the two (2) security organizations not to take the law into their own hands but to be professional and follow standard operating procedures. We wish also to appeal to all junior members from both organizations, MDF and MPS to remain disciplined and always emulate the good example set by their superiors as there is a good working relationship between superiors on both sides. They should also avoid engaging themselves in wrangles as they could not take the nation forward but result into breakdown of security which can be detrimental to the development of our beloved country. The two Ministries wish to advise the two organizations, to continue working together and ensure that any future disagreements are sorted out amicably. Lastly, we wish to commend the efforts so far taken by both the MDF and MPS in addressing the issue at hand. We further encourage them to continue working together in providing security to the nation. MAY THE SOUL OF LANCE CORPORAL PRINCE LAMECK REST IN PEACE Hon. Jappie Mhango, M.P. Hon.
