JULY 29 IS NATIONAL HOLIDAY IN OBSERVANCE OF EID’L FTR LINGAYEN –In keeping with th Muslim’s observance of the Eid’l Fitr, President Benigno Aquino III has declared July 29 a regular national holiday. Eid’l Ftr or Feast of Breaking the Fast is an important religious holiday celebrated by the Muslims worldwide. This religious activity is celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan which is the holy month of fasting. Pursuant to Republic Act 9177, President Noynoy has signed Proclamation No. 826 to declare Eid’l Ftr as a regular holiday in the country. The proclamation sought to give Filipinos the opportunity to celebrate with their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance of the Eid’l Ftr. The celebration also aimed to stir awareness among the Filipino people on the significance of the event. According to the proclamation, the declaration of Eid’l Ftr aims to bring its religious and cultural significance to the fore of national consciousness. Muslims celebrate the occasion where they pursue a three-day joyous festivity after the end of the month of fasting. The holiday celebrates the close of the 29 or 30 days of dawn to sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. It usually falls on the first Friday of the month which is a day when Muslims araound the world show a common goal of unity. The Muslim holiday has been recognized by the Philippine government after the declaration was first signed into law on November 13, 2002 by virtue of Proclamation 1083. The first national commemoration was on December 6, 2002 with the Philippines as the first Christian country to do it. The law was enacted in deference to the Filipino-Muslim community and to promote peace and harmony among major religions in the Philippines. /ADV
