JULY 31: MR FIXIT’S TOP TIPS ========================== . Top Treble --------------- Hull Mainz Lyon . *LILLE saved my night as they landed the Super Single at 6-4 with a convincing victory away to Grasshoppers. And what a night it was in the Champions League qualifiers as Celtic and Red Bull crashed to shock defeats while well-fancied Dnipro, Ludogerets and Standard Liege were all held at home. I’d advised caution when betting on the games and my one regret was not taking Benfica at nearly 3-1 after flagging up opponents Feyenoord couldn’t be backed after losing four star players. The biggest surprise of the night was Celtic’s 4-1 thumping in Poland with Legia Warsaw also missing two penalties. It was a shocking display by the Scottish champions, albeit with 10 men, and on the evidence of that they’ll concede and crash out at Murrayfield on Wednesday. Right after the game I asked McBookie for a price on Celtic to qualify and was hit by 7-1. Needless to say I wasn’t tempted. We move from the Champions League to the Europa League qualifiers and there are three British teams in action – Aberdeen, St Johnstone and Hull. Aberdeen have the toughest test away to Real Sociedad. The Spaniards have lost star man Antoine Griezmann to Atletico Madrid for £25million and fellow forward Carlos Vela is inujured but they still have plenty of quality. Aberdeen have the advantage of having played four competitive games in the Europa League and are buoyant after winning in Groningen. It makes best odds of 1-5 on a Spanish win tonight and 1-12 to qualify look as attractive as the Red Army in basques. That’s basques not Basque. The Dons are up against it but I wonder if anyone will have a sniff at 13-1 with Ladbrokes while Bet365 go 7-1 for them to qualify. Aberdeen plus two is at 23-20 with Sportingbet and you can even have plus three at 4-9 with Bet365. St Johnstone are 11-10 at Bet365 to beat Spartak Trnava at home and should do so although they could be missing star striker Stevie May. The Slovakians are decent but not as good as Luzern so Tommy Wright’s men have nothing to be scared about. I’m on Saints to qualify at 1-1 with Boylesports. Hull enter Europe for the first time and Steve Bruce’s men have a gentle opener away to Slovaks Trencin who almost blew a 4-0 lead against Vojvodina in the last round after losing 3-0 away from home. Bruce has added Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince to his squad and as long as the English club hit the ground running they should notch a win. My Top Treble in the Daily Record is Hull, Lyon at Mlada Boleslav and Mainz at home to Asteras and I’ll look to add more tips in the morning.
