JUsT FoR a LAuGH ho ho hee hee “Dartington is embracing radical change!” according to “The Boss At Dartington”. The innovative powerhouse behind the changes spoke honestly and loudly when he replied to concerns expressed by local people. He stated that “you can’t stop progress” and said that Dartington Hall has a responsibility to the memory of its founders to be at the front of an unrestrained neo liberal charge into a complete dissolution of anything familiar, nostalgic, boring or unprofitable. Part of the new ethical, sustainable, socially responsible developments will involve repackaging the historic village as a small dormer town, modelled on nearby dormer town, Ivybridge, once also a beautiful village. This will be done by encouraging the building of housing estates on fields between the village and Totnes. “This is the Dartington Vision”, said The Boss. “You cant stop progress, we want to share our land with future generations and feel we have a responsibility to our public. Also, we need the money ”. In a possible new enterprise, large areas of woodland will be felled and the land used to farm cattle. The high quality meat will be made into traditional British patties (similar to hamburgers) at the new socially aware meat processing plant, in what used to be the Great Hall, now also a popular wedding venue. The plant will employ “people who may have problems and some over fifty” and some of the patties will be donated to local food banks, in line with Dartingtons commitment to social responsibility. Some people at the meeting expressed concern at the loss of the environment but were told “you cant stop progress” The Shops At Dartington, previously The Cider Press, are now called “Lots Of Interesting Expensive Stuff From All Over The World”, but there is also some old stuff made into other things, and sometimes some local people who make things making things, some animals, and local food, don’t forget the local food, especially the pickle! If you are up at the Hall enjoying the vision of innovative, dramatic changes to the environment why not drop in at the visitor centre and try an ice cream, or a bag of chips. While you are there you might also like to get a replica of the Eiffel Tower, a map of the Pyrenees or half a pound of bacon. Enjoy! If You’re Not For Progress You’re Against It, and probably just aren’t bright enough to understand the complexity of running a big place. No Half Measures in “The World At Dartington”. PS Prince Charles is visiting next week so everything must be OK.
