Jack Bauer saved the world every week on 24. He killed and maimed to keep us safe. Now along comes Dick Cheney to tell us on Meet the Press Sunday morning that he and the CIA were the real Jack Bauers. The CIA never tortured prisoners because what they did wasnt torture. Rape, waterboarding, freezing to death one of the dozens of innocent Muslims who were caught up in the CIAs prisons? Not torture. Cheney cited former CIA directors who said so as proof. He also cited them as claiming, without any proof, that the torture worked. These were the same officials the Senate report documented had lied to the White House, the Congress and the American public. That report is flawed and full of crap, Cheney asserted, because the authors of this five-year study never talked to the actual agents who did the un-torture. Never mind that they were able to track down the reports and emails and messages from the field, including those from some agents who were horrified and sickened at what they were being told to do. And, anyway, none of the Senate Republicans signed the report. Except for that crazy old man John McCain, who was tortured himself. Cheney cited other American prisoners of war who said what the CIA had done wasnt really torture. What the Japanese and Germans did during World War II - now that was real torture, Cheney told NBCs Chuck Todd. And, anyway, Cheney said, he had to protect the country from other attacks. And hed do it again. Todd responded with some questions. But he never really laid a glove on Cheney, who at the end of his segment was beaming over his performance. Not to mention the knowledge that neither he nor any other officials in his administration will ever really be held accountable. Not like the Nazis or the Japanese. And as to that guy at the U.N. whos calling for the U.S. to prosecute those responsible for the un-torture, so what? Nobody really cares about the U.N. anyway, Cheney said.
