#JackKirby was born 97 years ago today. He is the co-creator of #CaptainAmerica, The #FantasticFour, The #Avengers, The X-Men, and The #Hulk, to name a very few. Without Kirby, those #Marvel movies we all have enjoyed so much over the last decade would not exist, because without Jack those characters would not exist. Jack died in 1994, so he never got to see how massively popular these characters have become. (Theres another side to this story, about Marvel refusing to give Jack his original art and financial due, but Im going to stick to the positive side of things for this; you can do a google search of Jack Kirby and Marvel to get the details of how the company screwed Jack over.) In any event, beginning in 2012, Jacks granddaughter started a campaign asking donations be made in Jacks honor to the HERO Initiative, which provides financial assistance to comic creators in financial need. Most comic creators are what are termed work-for-hire employees or independent contractors; the publishing companies, and their larger corporate ownership have no obligation to provide medical benefits, retirement benefits or anything except payment for the work done. Although a few guys make out well financially, most dont, and those comic creators of earlier decades, the 60s, 70s, and 80s, in particular did not get paid the higher rates that became more regular in the 90s. So, I am asking that today, in honor of Jack Kirby, you consider donating $15 (or more if you want) to the Hero Initiative, basically the cost of one movie ticket, what you probably spent to go see Captain America, or Guardians of the Galaxy, or Amazing Spider-Man, or The Avengers, in the theater. I figure, if you can shell out $15 to go see one of these films at a movie theater, you can shell out the same amount as way to honor the guys who created the characters in the movie.
