James 3:8-11 But no human being can subdue the tongue; it is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse people made in God’s image. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. These things should not be so, my brothers and sisters. A spring does not pour out fresh water and bitter water from the same opening, does it? Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers and sisters, or a vine produce figs? Neither can a salt water spring produce fresh water. Led by the power of the Holy Spirit, our speech will truly be a spring of "fresh water". This means doing things like speaking the truth in love, encouragement, and honest rebuking and correcting in the Lord between believers. A tongue that is sabotaged by evil masquerades as an imposter, offering empty lies and false praise. The power of God is able to make our words reflect the living water that is at work in us. Matthew 15:11 (NIV) says, "What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
