Submit - Be subject or put in submission Resist - Oppose Here James is giving two principles in living a stable Christian walk which will keep the Christian from going awry. First, we must submit ourselves unto God. This means we must give up all ideas of independence and place our mind in subjection to God and then our actions will follow. Both obedience and disobedience begins in the mind. Secondly, we are to steadfastly resist the devil. The word “resist” is very strong in that it alludes to having radical surgery in both thought and deed. We are to immediately cut off any sinful ideas which enter our mind so they can never become actions. If we continue to resist the devil, he will flee every time. He will not just flee one time, he will continually try to get you to sin and that is why we must have the radical spiritual surgery in our minds. We get into trouble when we submit to the devil and resist God’s attempt to keep us from sinning. He who has ears to hear!
