James Blight’s father was born in our museum building in 1931, while James’ Grandfather Barry Blight was the Plaster Mill Manager. James and Mary Wright are shown in, the Little Boy’s Room, which was his father’s nursery. We have devoted earlier pages to describing the impact the Blight family has had on Hillsborough. The first James Blight arrived in the Village in 1848 to organize and manage the local plaster deposits. Successive Blight generations went on to locate and develop coal mines in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, while maintaining an interest in gypsum and Albertite activities here in Hillsborough. For more than one hundred years the present day Victoriana Steeves Homestead Bed and Breakfast on Pleasant Street was the Blight House. From that gothic styled home the Blight Family set the beat, both socially and economically, for Albert County and beyond. Until James sat down at the Edna (Mrs. Joe Bun) Steeves pump organ in the Egypt Room we had no idea what an upbeat tempo his family was capable of lying down. James is a professional musician, teacher, arranger and composer, who lives in Toronto, The organ he is playing dates from the 1890’s, but under his talented touch it certainly does not sound its age. What a pleasure to meet James and Mary. The music was just icing on the cake. Cousin Kathleen & Paul
