James Chance - Christmas With Satan (1982) Warning: THIS MAY BE THE GREATEST CHRISTMAS SONG EVER! (Check out those horn harmonies at about 4 minutes and that slammin piano & guitar and thumpin pumpin bass throughout! Not to mention James ultra funky rockapunkabilly voice! And yeah the video is devilishly cool! And did I mention saxophone madness?) In 1981, dance-oriented NYC new wave label Ze put together the hippest holiday compilation ever to lack Phil Spector — from Was (Not Was) mourning Detroit to the Waitresses forgetting cranberries, A Christmas Record was a hoot. Noise-funked saxophone sadist James Chance (a.k.a. James White) was absent at first, but when a slightly altered version appeared in 82, he was there for six minutes — arriving at Beelzebubs eggnog party even before Spinal Tap. Not to mention honking the living skronk out of Christmas-carol fragments, while detached disco dollies behind him explained, Theres no angels or wise men, and certainly no virgins. Oh and if you havent heard James White & The Blacks (James Chance) youre really are missing out on a great band! I saw them back in the late 70s at club in NYC called The Paradise Garage (no longer around). The paradise was previously some kind of very kinky spa or something - at least thats the impression you got by the decadent mosaics on the walls there. Also on the bill that night were Teenage Jesus & The Jerks (Lydia Lunch), The Senders and Richard Hell & The Voidoids.
