Jamie Carragher on Liverpools title push: It would have been great to have been a part of it The former Reds vice-captain says he may have postponed his retirement had he known Liverpool were going to be so good 19 May: Jamie Carragher marks his 737th and final game for Liverpool Football Club with a clean sheet as the Reds end the season with a 1-0 win over QPR Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge has been so impressive Jamie Carragher admits it has made him wonder whether he retired a season too early. Carragher retired last summer having made 737 appearances for the Reds. Now a pundit with Sky Sports, Carragher says that Liverpool have almost made him regret hanging up his boots. He said: “I don’t think anyone saw this coming. “It would have been great to have been a part of it. I’m in a similar boat (to Steven Gerrard) in that it (the Premier League) is the only thing I missed out on. But whether I would have played this season at 36 I dont know. “Also, imagine making a mistake and costing them? Id have never have lived that down! “I think they are doing all right without me, don’t worry about that. The team, Brendan and the supporters are all as one and they are having a great season.” Carragher may have missed out on a Premier League crown - but he sincerely hopes his former team-mate Steven Gerrard wins the only trophy that has eluded him during his career. He continued: “Hes won every other honour. Hes probably the greatest player not to win a Premier League trophy. “Lots of players who have won it couldnt lace Stevies boots. He had to opportunity to leave but winning it with Liverpool is the equivalent to winning it five or six times elsewhere - that’s how much the club means to the supporters and Stevie.” That Liverpool are even in a position to win the Premier League is down to the great work of Brendan Rodgers - and Carragher says that if the Reds do finish top it will prove that the Northern Irishman’s records work. “It all comes down to winning things,” he said. “If he doesnt win it hes still done a great job until now. I was only with Brendan Rodgers for 12 months but we still have a great relationship and I thought he was a top manager when he came in. “If he wins the Premier League this season it will be one of the greatest achievements in their history.” The pressure is on with just four points separating the top three clubs and Carragher warns that all games are must-win at this stage - but he expects Liverpool to beat West Ham on Sunday. He said: “Thats something for both Man City and Chelsea - draws are like defeats at this stage. I watched West Ham on Monday and they were impressive away from home but they arent as good at home. “If Liverpool play well for 20 minutes the crowd may turn on them. The way Liverpool are playing at the moment Id expect them to win.” Liverpool have challenged for the league with a very English-spine this season and Carragher thinks that Roy Hodgson will be unable to ignore two of Liverpool’s young stars in the World Cup this summer. Both Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling have recently earned England recalls due to their club form. Carragher said: “I think he will take them. They are young, energetic players - exactly what you will need in the summer in Brazil. “Never mind going on the plane I think both of them are in with a shout of starting games. “If they have a good pre-tournament I think they have a great chance of starting the first game.”
