Jan 25 Last weekend in January While it wasn’t as warm as yesterday, the swell remained almost the same. Toothy bombs all the way down the beach. So we huffed and puffed down to the breakwater for a look, and sure enough there were a few guys out getting better ends than anyone else on up to El Porto… Once again the soft top gets noticed in the Journal – today for being frail. Caught this guy and hid soft-top carrying buddy heading home after a wave made quick work of the $100 Costco softy. And now, from the first annual Longfellow Film Festival, our review of “Captain Philips”. This is the story of the American Flag vessel, the Maersk Alabama which was apparently hijacked by Somali pirates and ended up almost costing the captain his life, if not for the rescue efforts of the good ole US Navy and their team of sharpshooters. Technically very accurate (I’ve been on a quite a few container ships over the years) the story had some trouble getting ramped up. Fully half of the folks at our screening were nodding of 45 minutes in to the thing. The thing that interested me was that an American flag vessel was actually owned by the Danish shipping company, Maersk. This is because there ARE no US container –ships in existence, outside of Matson Lines who serve Hawai’i and one destination in China. Odd but true. The LFJ gives “Captain Philips” 3.5 waves (out of six) See you in Feb!
