Jan 31 2014 Ice Fishing Report Walleye fishing has been good in all the typical areas. The shout from Mouse Island to the Bass Islands. I am hearing reports from 24 feet of water near Round Reef to 30 feet off of Niagara. A can B can Kellys Etc. Catches are ok not a lot of limits but nice size walleye. Sweedish Pimples or jigging rapalas as well as vibreating vertical baits worked slow some tipped with minnows others naked. Ice fishing is no differant than drift fishing from a boat. The fish react to weather changes. Typically afternoon and evening seems to be better but as with any fishing the rule is not set in stone. You can be looking at a blank fish finder screen and as soon as evening comes the fish lift off the bottom and you see them. Looking at a blank screen does not mean there are no fish there. When the fish are tight on the bottom they are invisable because fish finders pick up the air in a fishes body. We have put many a whooping on walleye and the screen is blank. Espically cold water walleye fishing in Lake Erie. Always use extreme caution when ice fishing there is always thin spots in the ice no matter how thick it may seem. White out blizzard conditions can come suddenly as there are no trees or structures to slow the wind down. When ice fishing always use caution !! coevannacharters
