Jan Cunningham Today · Edited · · Had a great Christmas. Rick and I were a little worried as this was our first Christmas with no kids, grandkids, parents during the Christmas season, although in January we get to go to India. We also almost had our first season with no artichokes (read below). Had our adopted family over, Cheryl Rognstad who has shared 7 Christmas with us in Romania, Efren, Marcela and Valeria Portillo for their second, and Michael Russell on his first Christmas in Romania. Turkey, although tiny, on Christmas day and artichokes (brown and shriveled, but hey, artichokes!) & fundue on Christmas Eve. Talked to all the kids, grandkids and parents both in the USA and India. It was really nice. Thanks for your prayers, support and thanks to our fellow co-workers in Romania. To top it off, it is snowing today! Happy New Years everyone. For those that dont know why I mentioned the artichokes, there is a funny history to them. When living in Spain years ago, I decided that artichokes made a cute Christmas Eve first course. I decorated them as little trees for the kids. In Spain it is very easy to find artichokes. When we moved to Romania 19 years ago, it became a fun challenge that many friends helped with. Friends have hand carried artichokes in their backpacks from Florida, in purses from Germany, one friend, Alina, had her mom who lives in Paris put 5 artichokes on a bus from Paris to Bucharest. They arrived in the middle of a blizzard. It took Alina 4 hours, 3 taxis (one got stuck on the tram line, one ran out of gas, to get them across Bucharest to me. It took Jonathan and I an hour to walk to the main street to wait for her. We helped push 10 cars out of the snow between our house and the street! But for 19 years we have had artichokes. This year Rick began looking several days prior to Christmas Eve. No luck. He finally said, I will go to one last store, and there they were, brown, small and shriveled, but ARTICHOKES! The tradition beats one more challenge. Again, Happy New Year to all.
