Jane Addams was a remarkable woman. Today, September 6th would have been her birthday. Who is Jane Addams? Only one of the greatest reformers and social activists this country has ever known. This is a woman who lived in times where women were kept largely silent and on the sidelines. Nevertheless, Jane Addams had the courage to speak up and stand up for her beliefs. She understood that, "The essence of immorality is the tendency to make an exception of myself." She also helped clarify the responsibility of citizenship when pointed out, "The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life." Jane Addams, a pioneer in the social work movement is one woman who lived her religion and by so doing inspired others the world over to join in the great cause of social justice. Truly a life worth celebrating!
